The Turtle Chair is a result of Lin's deep emotional connection with turtles since childhood. Understanding their natural habitat and behavior, Lin aimed to provide a comfortable space for turtles within modern residential living spaces. Chinese turtle keepers prefer to let their turtles roam freely rather than confining them to glass boxes. However, finding a suitable place for turtles to rest and hide in contemporary homes can be challenging.
The design of the Turtle Chair takes inspiration from the organic form of a turtle's living space. It features a cave-like structure with two openings, one serving as an entrance for the turtle to climb in and out, and the upper one providing a space for food delivery. Simultaneously, the chair's upper surface is designed to accommodate the physiological curve of the human body, ensuring a comfortable sitting and lying experience. By combining these two requirements, the Turtle Chair offers a harmonious blend of functionality for both humans and turtles.
The fabrication process of the Turtle Chair involves cutting 77 slices by machine and attaching a textured surface on both sides to reduce glare. These slices are then spliced at a 45-degree angle, creating an intriguing visual effect that breaks the limitations of traditional plank furniture. The chair's unique appearance coordinates with the curves and angles, resulting in an aesthetically pleasing piece.
When people sit or lie down on the Turtle Chair, they can experience the harmony between human and animal. This design promotes a shared life and represents the beauty of the natural form solidified in furniture. It serves as a reminder that our world is an organic whole, where humans should not only consider their own feelings but also respect and cherish the other creatures sharing our space.
Lin believes that designers have the power to influence human behavior and awaken environmental consciousness. By creating designs that consider the needs of both humans and nature, designers can inspire people to change their behavior and foster a more harmonious relationship with the world around them.
The Turtle Chair has overcome various creative and technical challenges. The fabrication process, including the intricate slicing and splicing at a 45-degree angle, required experimentation and technological breakthroughs. These challenges were successfully overcome to bring this unique piece of furniture to life.
The Turtle Chair has received recognition for its innovative design. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2015, which honors well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. This prestigious award acknowledges the Turtle Chair's integration of industry best practices, competent technical characteristics, and its contribution to a better world.
